The legend has it that before marching out for the battle of Mahabharata, the Pandavas along with Lord Krishna offered worship here praying for their victory, and donated the horses of their Chariots which made it an age-old tradition of offering horses made of silver, mud etc, depending upon one’s means, once the desire has been met. The Tonsure (head shaving) ceremony of Shri Krishna & Balram was also performed at this Shaktipeeth Shri Devikoop Bhadrakali Mandir.
LOCATION OF BHADARKALI TEMPLE
The Bhadrakali Temple is situated on the Jhansa Road in the town of Thanesar in the district of Kurukshetra. Bhadrakali is a form of Shakti. This is considered to be one of the 51 Shakti ‘pithas’ of India. It is believed that an anklet of Sati fell in the well. The mythical incident of Sati is being recalled here with a marble ankle.

The most auspicious time to visit the Bhadrakali Temple in Kurukshetra is during the Hindu festivals when the temple festivities are at their peak. Navratri, a significant nine-day festival dedicated to the Goddess Durga, is particularly celebrated with great fervor here. Devotees flock to the temple during this time to seek blessings from Goddess Bhadrakali, a form of Goddess Kali. Visiting during the cooler months of October to March is advisable as the weather is more pleasant, which makes the temple visit and participation in the religious activities more comfortable.
Apart from the festive season, another good time to visit the Bhadrakali Temple is during the Kurukshetra Festival, which generally takes place in the month of December. It is a grand event that commemorates the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita with various cultural and spiritual programs.
